The provincial export has no Oil and Gas purpose field. Energy operators appear mostly under a Commercial label. Correct classification evaluates sub-classification first, then known holder rules, before falling back to the purpose label.
Most energy diversions are temporary takes with no volume attached. Among licences that report a volume, the energy share runs near 14%. Use is lower again: sector-wide AER aggregates report about 22% of licensed allocation used and about 82% recycled in 2023.
For a cumulative effects screen or holder inventory, a purpose-only filter will produce a defensible-looking chart that is wrong. Classify by sub-classification and holder, label whether the exhibit counts rows or sums volume, and note the volume-blank exclusion.
Spot-check material holders in the Environmental Records Viewer before any client chart.
